The coffee-producing countries around the equator are still 99% mere suppliers of raw materials. The real value-added chain, i.e. roasting and packaging, takes place in the rich countries. Only by processing locally can a country develop and create training and skilled jobs. Trade rather than development aid is the best way to achieve self-reliance and independence. Rich countries should open their markets and allow developing countries to participate in their growth. Direct Trade is not a trademark, but a commitment to all those who want more than just fair payment for coffee farmers. It is based on transparency, fairness and sustainability.
